Six Steps to Successful Parenting

Presenter: Andrew Duggan

Friday 2nd May 2008

at the KCC Foundation, London

£85.00

A workshop for Therapists, Counsellors, Psychologists, School Nurses, Teachers and Headmasters, Health Visitors, Social Workers, GPs and Doctors

In this one day workshop, Andrew Duggan will explore the ‘Six Steps to Successful Parenting’, a solution-focused approach to helping parents manage their child and adolescents behaviour. Different to other parenting approaches it is not based on professional expertise or a ‘Manual’ on how to parent. It does not focus on the problems that parents bring to the sessions, but on the ‘exceptions’, the times when the parents feel in control or manage to parent the way they would like to.

Six Steps to Successful Parenting allows the parents to ‘tap’ into and reconnect with the strengths, resources, skills and competencies that they show every day in parenting their children.

Six Steps to Successful Parenting focuses on:

Problem-solving – allows parents to respond to children and focus their attentions on finding their own solutions rather than exploring problems.

Strengths, Resources, Knowledge and the things they do well. This allows the parents to apply past successful strategies to present challenges.

Active rather than directive – based on the idea that helping parents make decisions for themselves.

Empowering and Positive – encourages all those involved to see themselves as the person with the ‘expertise’ in solving their own difficulties.

Future-orientated – taking the position that change is inevitable and that only a small change is necessary to begin the process of solution building, no matter how complicated the problem seems to be.

All parents know more about their situation than anyone, therefore they should define the goals and they are the experts in parenting.

Andrew Duggan is a child and family solution-focused practitioner, and a Senior University Lecturer

His parenting approach has been evaluated in both Ireland and Finland and is now being develop further by the Department of Health & Children in Ireland.
