The Clinical Practicum

Who the training is designed for...

The course offers practical, 'hands-on' skills development course for work with people overcoming the difficulties of life.  The course is designed for those seeking opportunities for direct, supervised therapy with clients, seeing them in their family, couple or individual relationships

Practitioners interested in discovering ways of working therapeutically with people experiencing difficulties at any stage of life.  Applications are welcome from all professionals and from those without a clinical background who wish to gain and or enhance their systemic, social constructionist skills.  This course is of particular value to students on Foundation level or First Clinical year courses, who are preparing to work clinically with clients. The course is not assessed.

Aims of the Course...

Participants on the course have opportunities to work with clients as a team-member and as the interviewing therapist.

The aim of systemic therapy is to work briefly and effectively,  enabling clients to move forward from a named problem to its dis-solution.  The "systemic" approach is one that explores connections, networks of relationships and communication patterns between individuals and their significant relationships and the beliefs that give meaning to behaviour.  It is a holistic approach that recognises all experiences and actions as valid, but that some are more desirable to one person's framework of understanding than to another's.

The course offers:

learn by observing, by doing and with time to reflect

widen perspectives and widen your choice of understandings

Use your unique experience and abilities to engage with clients and colleagues in therapeutic conversations

create with clients new and beneficial connections for significant change

adapt your unique abilities to resolve client dilemmas

work with clients, promoting their abilities to create new ideas for action

maintain neutrality by mobilising and reflecting on your ideas

experience working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team

use the resources on the course to discuss client work in your own agency
